Catalytic carbons are the newest class of activated carbons for odor control. These carbons also exhibit an enhanced capacity for H2S, but achieve this increased capacity differently than do caustically impregnated or blended carbons. Catalytic carbons convert adsorbed H2S into sulfuric acid and sulfurous acid, which is stored more efficiently on carbon than is H2S (but not as efficiently as elemental sulfur). A key advantage of catalytic carbons is that the converted acids are water soluble, allowing the carbon to be regenerated in place by simply washing it with water. Catalytic carbons do not have impregnants and therefore do not exhibit the reduced organic odor capacity nor increased bed fire potentials of the impregnated carbons.

    Darco H2S is a unique product that is manufactured without the use of chemical impregnation to the surface of the carbon. It is specially developed for the removal of hydrogen sulfide, also known as H2S (the main source of sewer and septic gas odors) and other compounds commonly found in municipal odor control applications. With Darco H2S, hydrogen sulphide is removed catalytically rather than by chemical adsorption. Because of its catalytic properties, Darco H2S gives you the high loading rates of impregnated carbons without the thermal risks associated with chemically treated carbons (caustic impregnated carbons). This makes Darco H2S the perfect choice for use in sewage treatment plants and pumping stations where these compounds are typically found. The absence of a chemical impregnation means that in certain applications, Darco H2S can be regenerated* on site with water (instead of hazardous chemicals used with impregnated carbons), thereby re-establishing the active catalytic sites within the internal pore structure. While catalytic carbons cost more than standard or impregnated activated carbons, the end result is that it has the adsorbing capabilities of activated carbon without the shorter life and with the benefit of easily being regenerated.*

    Darco H2S is an non-impregnated, bituminous coal-based catalytic activated carbon which has been specially developed for removing hydrogen sulfide and sulfur compounds from air streams. It is well suited for use in sewage treatment plants and pumping stations where these compounds are typically found. Darco H2S gives you the high loading rates of impregnated carbons without the thermal risks associated with some chemically treated carbons. Darco H2S can also be washed with water to improve long term performance.*

    H2S capacity is measured using ASTM standard method D6646-01. Testing requires passing a moist air stream containing 1% by volume H2S though an appropriately sized column (per ASTM requirements) packed with activated carbon and monitoring to a 50 ppmv H2S breakthrough. Results are reported as grams of H2S adsorbed per gram of activated carbon.

    *Note: Washing Darco H2S is not recommended in most cases due to the high potential sulfur contents, which can be washed off the carbon. Proper clothing and respirator must be utilized when regenerating carbon with water.
